What’s in a name?
For most self-proclaimed realists, the idea of spending $1000 on a purse is as useful as starting a diet on Thanksgiving.
It’s for mere fashion followers, they’ll say, who have somehow bought into the idea that these bags are “worth it”.
Worth. A term so loosely thrown around. I mean, sure, if you see purses as utilitarian—as simply a way of carrying your wallet, keys, and spare toothbrush (does anyone still think this way?)—then no, dropping a grand on a bag is not “worth it”. Save your money for a rainy day. Save for your retirement. That one black bag you’ve had since 2003 is good enough.
Are you yawning yet? I know I am.
Of course, for the label-loving lady, an explanation is unnecessary. That giddy feeling she gets when carrying her favorite bag is reason enough. She sees these purses as pieces of art, symbols of sheer haute couture brilliance.
The real die-hard fans—the ones who can’t really afford it—save for months before having the means to get the bag they covet. Are they crazy? Could be. But after all: women’s love for purses knows no bounds. It’s a well-known fact.
My advice to you? If you’re going to invest in a timeless designer bag, be smart about it. Don’t get the latest “it” bag with all the bells and whistles. While it might look fab, heaven forbid it should end up on the dreaded out list a month after you’ve taken it around town. Get the bag that has stood the test of time and shows no sign of slowing down.
Here’s a list of top 5 must-have bags that are well worth the investment:
1. The Louis Vuitton speedy. Classic. Must-have.
2. The Chanel 2.55 chain purse. Tres chic.
3. The Gucci shoulder bag. Always in style.
4. The classic Prada black clutch.
5. Hermes Birkin. The ultimate in exclusive luxury.

I could not agree with you more. At one time I thought buying a handbag that cost $1,000 or more was crazy, and maybe I would not spend that much money on a bag. But I started researching handbags and their designers, and what I found was that some designer bags are hand made, from the first stitch to the last. Most of the bags are made from quality materials, and much of the process is painstaking.
So to each his own. If someone wants to spend large sums of money on designer purses, go right ahead. Its your money, you worked for it. Enjoy!
