Presumably you were hired for your skills and not your awesome fashion sense. That being said, never underestimate the importance of how you present yourself: people inevitably attribute certain qualities to certain styles, so might as well put some thought into your outfits before heading off to work, right?
Here are some office wear dos and don’ts to help you put your most fashionable foot forward.
DO take note of your environment and dress accordingly. If most people at your office are casual, you can give the three piece suit a rest. Likewise, if your coworkers look very professional, maybe your Ed Hardy collection is best saved for the weekend. After all, you do want to represent your company appropriately.
DO put your own stamp on your style. If work calls for more conservative clothing, wear those bright earrings or wild stilettos you love so much. The importance of branding yourself in life as well as at work has been proven to be extremely effective. What’s your fashion trademark?
DO dress for your age and shape. You probably don’t want to be known as the woman who raids her daughter’s closet for clothing. With all the choices available today, you can definitely still be sexy while covering up. It’s all about finding pieces that highlight your best features and leave something to the imagination.
DON’T show too much skin. Unless your job involves mixing margaritas, there’s no real reason for excessive cleavage and skin-tight dresses. Another bad sign? If you have to keep yanking down on your skirt. Keep it classy to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions.
DON’T be a slave to trends. While Vogue might suggest lime wedges and fur-trimmed mini-skirts, don’t go overboard with too many trends at once. Fashion risks can be taken outside. A crisp white shirt, a pencil skirt, and black trousers at work are always a safe bet.
You spend most of your time at work, so make the fashion choices that allow you to feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful.
