Much Music Video Awards 2011: Behind the stage

You know summer has officially begun when The Much Music Video Awards invade downtown Toronto. The show is famed for being one of the most unpredictable, out of control music parties of the year, and features some of the world’s biggest stars. This year, devoted fans camped outside the venue for days, hoping to get up close and personal with their favorites. Lady Gaga delighted her little monsters by opening and closing the show; the crowd went wild for Avril Lavigne’s comeback; and Bruno Mars brought his cool retro vibe to the stage.

More MMVA highlights:

Host Selena Gomez presented surprise guest (and boyfriend) Justin Bieber with his award for International Video of the year by a Canadian artist. It was the awww moment heard around the world when he pretended not to know her and asked her out on a date.

Hollywood bad boy Colin Farrell came out a as a presenter. His Irish charm and accent were both present. Swoon.

Simple Plan arrived in a pink limo and the members of the band stepped onto the red carpet in teeny tiny white shorts and belly shirts. Subtle elegance at its best.

The one and only Snoop Doggy Dogg made the crowd go ballistic by emerging out of a coffin and giving a surprise performance.

MMVA Style:

The Much Awards and the MTV Awards bring some of the most cutting-edge, daring fashion. The stars let loose and wear outfits that would probably end up on Joan River’s worst-dressed list. Bieber in a “Saved by the Bell” Kelly Kapowski T-shirt, for example.

Selena Gomez rivaled Gaga in terms of fashion changes, and she looked great. My favorite look for her was this champagne-colored Burberry Prorsum dress.

Avril Lavigne stuck to her rocker roots wearing black, lots of leather, and studded boots.

“The Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev shined in a stunning, iridescent, emerald green strapless dress with an asymmetric bow by Georges Chakra Couture.

If you got to catch the show, you know so much more took place. Catch the performances and red carpet moments on

The BHD Gift Lounge

Fashion website Broken Heel Diaries hosted the celeb-filled gifting lounge for this year’s Much Music Video Awards and the stars were thrilled to receive designer accessories from BTR as well as $50 shopping credit. Who got in on the fun?

Juno-winning rapper Kardinal Offishall, who wrote on our poster “looking forward to spending money with you!” He picked up a Hugo Boss cologne.

MTV VJ Nicole Holness was bar none the most enthused. The animated host constantly shops the site and said the BTR Local Celebrity tee she wore on her show “MTV live” created major buzz amongst her Twitter followers.

Erin Karpluk and Adam Fitzpatrick from the hit CBC show Being Erica. Erin chose Tom Ford sunglasses while her co-star went for Prada shades.

Singer Danny Fernandes, who’s hit singles are blowing up the charts showed some love for BTR and was so excited to sign up.

Far East Movement and Dev (the guys who got you feeling fly like a G6) stopped by as well. They got the crowd ready to party at the MMVA’s when they performed their 2 monster hits.

A cut above: Judith Leiber accessories

Judith Leiber accessories

I am a strong believer in overlooking price tags when it comes to certain fashion classics. Some things are just worth the indulgence. A Hermès scarf. A pair of Louboutin pumps. A Louis Vuitton Speedy.

And an exquisitely designed Judith Leiber evening minaudière.

The brand’s legendary crystal-embellished creations are a throwback to extravagant Hollywood glamour from eras past, but with the kind of cutting-edge craftsmanship that transcends passing trends.

With samples featured in illustrious museums all around the world, a long history of outfitting First Ladies for U.S. Presidential Inaugurations, and a roster of stars who display their adulation on the red carpet and beyond, Judith Leiber is without a shadow of a doubt one of America’s most iconic brands.

Emulate glitz-loving Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez—and countless other style-savvy celebs—and adorn yourself with one of Judith Leiber’s bejeweled masterpieces.

Pricey? Perhaps. But most certainly an investment. And a whole lot less expensive if you buy it here today.

Shop the Judith Leiber event during the 4 PM Happy Hour Twist and discover what these legendary designs are truly made of.

Soak up the Sun: celebrity spotlight

Summer is in full effect here at BTR and we couldn’t be happier. We brave long, cold winters in Montreal, so if anyone can appreciate the rays, it’s us. Gone are the days of hiding under layers to prevent frostbite, scrubbing salt from our poor boots, and locking ourselves in so as to not front glacial winds. Now it’s time to soak up the sun, and what better way to gear up for a sizzling new season than by drawing style inspiration from the hottest celebs.

Sure, they’ve got it easy, what with their personal stylists, sunny California weather year round, and that fun little thing called unlimited disposable income. But good news, BTR shoppers: you, too, can look like stars without withdrawing from your retirement fund. These SOAK UP THE SUN events were created with you in mind. Now grab some iced tea and let’s get started.

The floppy hat. Leave it to super glamorous Kim Kardashian to sport this ultra-trendy look. She wore it on her hit TV show “Kourtney & Kim take New York” and it instantly became a hit. Here she pairs it with shorts for a sweet summer look. For those who find this one too bold, check out the San Diego Hat Company event for more options.

Twilight’s Ashley Greene is spotted wearing her beloved Paul Frank shades. These cool styles are perfect the young trendsetter who’s always on the hunt for exciting new looks. Turn a simple outfit into a showstopper with these snazzy frames.

Some people were blessed with dark, sun-kissed skin; others have to put in the time to get the results. They either lay out in the sun, hit the tanning salon, or try some tanning lotions. If you’re scared of looking orange and streaky, fear not: they don’t make ‘em like they used to. This Immoral tanning lotion will give you a dark yet natural look you’ll love—enough to make Jennifer Aniston jealous.

If you’re like me, you have your share of black outfits. Put those aside for the moment and welcome some seasonal white into the mix. Minka Kelly shows us a fun way to wear a simple white blouse: tie it into a knot and pair with a long, hippy skirt. Relaxed, cool, and effortless.

Let’s make this a summer that goes down in the books as being the most fun, eventful, and of course, the most stylish. Whether you get sun all year (grrrrr) or only enjoy it for a limited time, these SOAK UP THE SUN events are just what the doctor ordered.

Shopaholic Showdown: we have a winner!

Shopaholic Showdown winner

Remember when we put you all to the challenge to prove your undying passion for fashion in a healthy yet competitive Shopaholic Showdown? There were plenty of players, but only one winner. Her name?

…drum roll…

Bethia from Evanston, Illinois! Please join us in congratulating her on her big win after avidly participating in last week’s events. She is undoubtedly a fierce fashion addict who is going to milk her $500 prize all it’s worth.

Bethia now has free range to shop for the wardrobe of her dreams. If I had my pick, I would head straight for the Badgley Mischka event on now, the Pucci sunglasses event on at 4 PM ET, and the Maria Bianca Nero event starting tomorrow at 11 AM ET.

But that’s just me.

What would your top picks be if you had an extra $500 to spend at Beyond the Rack?

Packing tips: the dos and don’ts for trendy travels.

If you’re like most travelling ladies, you don’t joke around when it comes to packing. Some might be able to just pack shorts and flip flops and hit the road. But you? You need…options.

Planning for weather changes is one thing, but toting around your entire summer wardrobe is another. Here are some tips and tricks to have you looking fab without going over the luggage weight capacity at the airport. (You know who you are.)

DO your homework. If the weather in Playa del Carmen calls for a week of blistering hot sun, you might be able to do without those knit sweaters you live in at home. Chance of rainstorms? A light raincoat, an umbrella, and a pair of closed shoes will do the trick.

DON’T over-pack “just in case”. While I’m all for costume changes, try to stay focused, people. Plan for outfits that you’re actually likely to wear. Don’t bring that sweater Aunt Fern knitted you for Christmas. Also, keep in mind that you might pick up a few things on location, so better save some room.

DO bring fun accessories that you might not have the chutzpah to wear at home. That cowboy hat that’s been gathering dust or those zany bright shades you bought at a flea market are perfect examples. Vacation is a time to let loose and do things a little differently. Take pictures at your own risk.

DON’T bring you entire makeup kit, either. If you’re going to the tropics, your heavy foundation and eye shadow risk melting into a goopy mess. Mascara, lip gloss, eyeliner, and a light concealer are all you need. And please don’t skimp on the sunscreen, unless you’re going for the lobster look.

DO bring comfortable shoes as well as heels. You never know where your feet will take you on vacation. As fashionable as it sounds to spend your days in neon-colored pumps, always err on the side of comfort when in new lands. Ever tried walking in the sand in heels? Not fun.

DON’T bring a bunch of purses you won’t need. All you should have is one beach bag, one day bag, and one evening bag. Pack a basic, versatile clutch that goes with everything. And for security as well as convenience, best not to bring designer goods. Salt water and Chanel are never a good combo.

DO bring more than one bathing suit. Since they’re so small, packing a few shouldn’t be a problem. I would suggest having one two-piece, as well as a one-piece (in case you’re burnt or you’ve spent too much time at the buffet).

DON’T lug around the same old used luggage you’ve had since ’94. Invest in attractive, quality pieces. If you have to drag it around airports and hotels for a week, make it something you like looking at. Check out the Travel Pro event for a durable piece that’ll have you jet-setting in style.

DO make a list of everything you need. Your mother had a point. Because without your passport or cards, having this season’s cutest tote won’t take you very far. Make sure you have everything you need to make it a trip to remember.

Here are my fashion picks for your next vacation:

BB Dakota dress, Faith Connexion shorts, Christina C swimsuit, and Bebe platforms. Events on now!

Congratulations to our Mother’s Day contest winners!

2011 Mother's Day winners

Nearly a month has passed since we asked you to share with us why you and your mother deserved to win a $1000 shopping spree at Beyond the Rack.

A record-breaking 667 entries later, we’ve emerged from the decision-making process with a newfound appreciation and respect for all you incredible mothers out there.

You are nurturers, survivors, role models, pillars, and personal heroes to your loved ones. Many of you have faced tremendous hardships—from illness, to loss, to adversity—and all of you have lived, learned, and loved through it all.

And while picking a winner was beyond difficult (it took us long enough), we did decide on a very special mother and daughter pair.

Please join us in congratulating Vanessa and her amazing mom, Jane. After today, each of these beautiful ladies will be able to enjoy a $500 shopping spree at Beyond the Rack—a well-deserved prize we hope will make them smile

Here’s their touching story, in Vanessa’s own words:

“Along with all the other women who have entered this contest on behalf of their amazing mothers, I would love an opportunity to do something to make my mom, who never does anything for herself, feel radiant.

My mom is a beautiful woman who, in the last 10 years, has lost confidence in her appearance, often referring to herself as a “fat, old woman”. She hides behind funky glasses and wears clothes that she thinks hide her perceived imperfections. Though her wardrobe is borderline “What Not To Wear” worthy, and even though money is tight for my parents, my mom would rather spend any extra cash helping a recent Iranian immigrant neighbour’s daughter pay for a college class. She’s an avid wearer of bad monochromatic outfit looks and would NEVER take the time to find jeans that flatter or cost more than $40.

My mom is a special education teacher specializing in Autism in Vancouver. In June, she’s leaving for 6 months to volunteer at a school in Yelapa, Mexico. She’s been walking like crazy to get in shape for all the stairs there (there are no roads and all the houses and school are up the hillside) so now her shabby wardrobe is even more ill-fitting. Please allow for me to assist in picking out some pretty new things for a great mom who always gives to her 2 kids – and everyone else’s – everything before thinking of herself. I’m also sending love to all the deserving and incredible moms whose daughters have written such lovely things about them above.”

Thank you to all for such heartwarming and inspiring tales. Moms rock!
