7 Women Designers Who Changed the Face of Fashion

In the spirit of International Women’s Day, we’re honoring the women who’ve blazed trails in the fashion world and changed the industry as we know it. Read on for a look at 7 of our favorite female designers who’ve influenced fashion forever.

Lanvin
Jeanne Lanvin
Lanvin began as a children’s clothing label, after making clothes for her daughter that were so beautiful, a number of wealthy people began requesting copies for their own children. Soon, though, mothers began requesting similar designs for themselves, and within a few years the business had grown to include womenswear, perfume and home design, making Lanvin the first designer to see the potential of a lifestyle brand.

Coco Chanel
Coco Chanel
Chanel’s influence today is as strong as ever, as the house she founded remains one of the most coveted and respected labels in the world. She introduced what are now staples of sportswear into womenswear, in part, by borrowing from the vocabulary of menswear, setting an early bar for equality in the fashion world..

Madame Gres
Madame Grès
Classically trained in sculpture, Grès became a leading French couturier of her generation and costume designer, best known for her classically inspired floor-length pleated gown, and has been referred to as “the master of the wrapped and draped dress.”

Prada
Miuccia Prada
The scope of Prada’s designs – from the nylon handbags in the mid ’80s that made her famous to her critically acclaimed fifties-inspired collection – is truly an inspiration. With a strong eye for design and trend, as well as her astute business sense, she will remain an iconic designer for decades to come.

Diane VonFurstenberg
Diane von Fürstenberg
It goes without saying that Fürstenberg was instrumental in revolutionizing womenswear with the introduction of her classic wrap dress – but her work as the CFDA’s president, nurturing young talent and helping to set healthier standards within the industry, truly set the standard for empowered women designers everywhere.

Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood
Thanks to Westwood, modern punk and new wave fashion made a strong mainstream appearance, with bold classic style that’s here to stay. Without her, safety pin shirts, sky-high platforms, plaid pants, and of course, expertly draped details would not be such timeless trends.

Karan
Donna Karan
As the role of women in the workforce really began to gain momentum, with more women rising to the top of the career ladder, ladies’ workwear staples became more refined. Karan was responsible for developing stylish everyday career looks that were comfortable and gave off an aura of power – clothes that Karan, as a career woman and mother, would also want to wear.

Top Red Carpet Trends: Oscars 2016

Last night’s Oscars awards ceremony set the stage for another year of red carpet glamour! Read on for the details of this year’s fashion highlights and the top trends rocked by your favorite celebs.

WOW in White

All-white gowns have always been a classic Oscars look, and this year was no exception. Lily Cole updates a classic silhouette with a feminine yet futuristic pearlescent ballgown, Priyanka Chopra looks stun in a sheer and lace mermaid dress, Rooney Mara looks lovely as ever in a bold vintage-inspired look with unexpected details, and Olivia Wilde goes avante-garde in a structured Grecian gown featuring a plunging neckline and flared shoulder details.

Black Swan

Oscars Black Swans

Of course there was a dark side to last night’s Oscars fashion. Jennifer Garner flaunts her toned physique in an asymmetrically-structured Valentino gown, Kelly Ripa‘s simple silhouette screams glamour with its delicate details, Dorith Mous goes gothic chic with a high lace neckline and mountain of black tulle, and Jennifer Lawrence throws it back in style with a gorgeous 1920’s look.

Razzle Dazzle

Oscars Glitz and Glamour

What would the Hollywood festivities be without a bit of glitz and glamour? Naomi Watts rocks a strapless jewel-tone look with beaded details and diamond collar, Margot Robbie stands strong in a shimmering gold ensemble featuring a plunging neckline, Saoirse Ronan stays true to her Irish roots with a luxurious, fully-beaded emerald gown, and Roshumba Williams shines bright like a diamond with a glimmering silver gown featuring a high neckline and contrasting strap details.

Best & Worst Dressed of the Grammy Awards 2016

With last night marking the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, we tuned in to watch our favorite artists and performers get props for their outstanding talents and achievements. Unlike some of the stuffier award ceremonies, the musical crowd goes a little wilder with their wardrobe selections, for better or worse. Read on for some of the fashion hits and misses from last night’s show.

THE HITS

Fresh face Lianne La Havas makes her red carpet debut in a stunning golden chartreuse gown, nude t-strap pumps, and classic up-do. Bella Hadid goes simple, but not understated, in a slinky black tie front dress featuring a dramatic neckline, cut-out sides, and subtle embellishments. We love her demure center part hairstyle paired with a perfect smoky eye. Chrissy Teigen shows that you can still look glamorous while rocking a bump, with a perfectly structured dress and a tonal lace cape for a delicate touch of texture.

LADY GAGA
But of course, Lady Gaga stole the show with her lively tribute to David Bowie with flaming red hair, a heavily embellished vibrant blue dress featuring a daring side slit, and glittery eye makeup to complete the look. Who better to honor one of pop music’s most enduring legends?

THE MISSES
WORST DRESSED
Hold up. Did Joy Villa, Jacqueline Van Bierk, and Z LaLa call each other before getting ready for the red carpet to coordinate their hideous outfits? Or are they simply trolling us all by ironically wearing last season’s teen goth castaways from Hot Topic? Either way, if the intent was to bewilder and confuse, then we’ve gotta say, well-played, ladies, well-played.

Edgy With A Dash Of Glamour: #MakeoverMonday

Makeover Monday makes another comeback with Stacey from our merchandising department! We gave her a glamorous makeup, hair and outfit revamp with a modern, edgy twist. Read on for the rundown on how you can achieve the look at home!

First, we started with a mid-high ponytail, separating into two sections and twisting them down. 2016 is all about updating classic trends and expecting the unexpected!

For makeup, we accentuated her fine bone structure with a base foundation, blush, and some light contouring with highlighter and bronzer.

Next, we made her eyes pop with a few swipes of shadow, using a darker transition color at the crease with a bit of subtle shimmer on the lid and and a highlight just on the brow bone.

To really open up the eye area, we applied a touch of shimmering highlighter to the inner corners of the eyes as well as using a light beige pencil along the waterline.

Next, we really emphasized the look with copper eyeshadow under the eye, and a brown liner on the top lid, followed by faux lashes and a generous dose of mascara.

Finally, we enhanced her eyebrows for an extra structured look and sealed the deal with a scene-stealing purple lipstick.

To complement the bold look of Stacey’s makeup, we paired a crisp pleated black jumpsuit featuring faux leather lapel details with gold geometric statement earrings and a fun bangle.

The finished look? Punchy yet polished, fun and totally office-appropriate. This outfit transitions seamlessly from the boardroom to a cinq-à-sept with the girls. Best of all? You can shop her look on the site today!
