Oscar-Worthy Jewelry

Last week’s annual Academy Awards showcased some of the most stellar jewelry styles we’ve seen in decades. With trends of oversized bling, beaded gemstones, and white hot diamonds, here’s how to steal the looks for less.

Tassels and Fringe

tasseled details

Margot Robbie’s sapphire-beaded tasseled pendant by Van Cleef and Arpels, valued at $1.5 million, was truly a showstopper. Get the look with pieces such as this beaded turquoise tassel necklace or this gold chain fringe statement piece.

Silver and Diamond Drop Collars

Zoe Saldana sported this Neil Lane diamond detail collar. Look for styles like this black and clear gemstone collar or this silver and clear gemstone drop necklace.

Black Gemstones

Behati Prinsloo rocked a black diamond and gold de Grisogono Boule necklace. Make the look your own with this black and gold multi-strand chain, and pair with these cutting-edge earrings.

Diamond Details

Delicate and understated yet hardly a wallflower look, there’s a reason diamonds have been called a girl’s best friend. Get Dakota Johnson’s white-hot style with single stud earrings or haute hoops. And pair with a red carpet-ready bracelet like this clear gemstone star cuff for an Oscar-winning style.

Red Hot Red Carpet Styles: 87th Academy Awards

All eyes were tuned to the red carpet last night, as our favorite celebs turned out in their finest for the first and last fashion stop of the year. While everyone seemed to play it very conservative this season, it was anything but boring. Two major trends stood out:

The Delicate Details

oscars2015_textured

Luxurious lace, embroidery, and beadwork were definitely last night’s showstoppers. Emma Stone shines bright in this beaded Elie Saab gown. We love the artistic sheer panel details and the hair-flattering chartreuse color. Giuliana Rancic spices it up in this lace-detailed Mireille Dagher design; the statuesque silhouette flatters all the right curves. Jamie Chung is truly a firecracker in her beaded Yanina Couture gown. Jenna Dewan-Tatum looks smoking in a beaded white Zuhair Murad dress. Rosamund Pike steals the show in this floral lace Givenchy gown; the scalloped neckline a lovely contrast to the high side slit. Jennifer Lopez looks anything but demure in this embellished blush-colored Elie Saab gown featuring a fearless plunging neckline.

The Solid and Sophisticated

oscars2015_solid

A combination of clean lines and punchy, all-over color was definitely a red-carpet win. Jennifer Hudson rocks it in this structured Romona Keveza dress. We love the subtle pop of color in her understated accessories. Margot Robbie modernizes ’70’s glam in this Saint Laurent gown with sheer, billowing sleeves. Dakota Johnson is red-hot in Saint Laurent with its embellished off-shoulder detail. Gwyneth Paltrow looks chic and sleek in this one-shoulder gown by Ralph & Russo Couture. We’re green with envy over Scarlett Johansson’s form-fitting Versace dress and matching emerald collar. Anna Kendrick looks polished in this Grecian-style design by Thakoon. We love the structured silhouette and subtly sexy keyhole detail.

The Faux Pas

oscars2015_fail

And of course, no list would be complete without a rundown on some of the event’s fashion flops. Jessica Chastain misses the mark in this layered Givenchy dress. While the color looks remarkable against her skin and hair color, the oddly draping neckline and under-styled hair remind us more of last-minute prom style. Julianne Moore looks matronly in this ill-fitting Chanel design – the horizontal stripe details do no justice to her lovely figure. Lady Gaga does Lady Gaga in this detailed Azzedine Alaïa gown. While the beautifully beaded dress shows potential, the boxy sleeves and dish-glove pairing make this more costume-party appropriate. Reese Witherspoon’s delicate features look washed out in this highly-structured Tom Ford design. We’d prefer to see her stick to her usual spring palette.

The Best and Worst Dressed of the 49th ACM Awards

All of country music’s biggest stars were under one roof last night, in Las Vegas. While there were many stunning gowns, there were also quite a few missteps. It’s time to call the BTR Fashion Police.

Here is our list of the Best and Worst Dressed of the 49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards:

Best:

acm_awards_best

Taylor Swift: TayTay flawlessly rocked the crop top last night. The top cut-outs and the skirt slit elevates the look for the prestigious occasion. We think she is channeling a little Angelina with the leg.

Kellie Pickler: She looks fantastic! This Romona Keveza gown is flowy, fun, and perfect for spring!

Kimberly Perry: This dress exudes class and elegance. It hugs her curves in all the right ways, and the glittery pattern only serves to accentuate them.

Danielle Bradbury: The youngest winner of The Voice was a knockout in this glittery gown. With the bright red lipstick and waves, she looks completely glamourous.

Olivia Munn: Wow! What a great color, not to mention a perfect fit! This gown surely made a splash on the red carpet last night.

Worst:

acm_awards_worst

RaeLynn: What is going on here? A feathered hem on a flared skirt, and a crocodile embossed trim? This dress is all over the place and not flattering in the least!

Kacey Musgraves: The ruching on this gown makes it look like a Prom dress. The fabric looks very stiff, and the belt is very early 2000s.

Shawna Thompson: Yes, floral prints are on trend for spring, but oversized poppies are not. Especially if they come on a background of taupe.

Shakira: Obviously Shakira looks good, but this Zuhair Murad dress does not. The cut-out pattern looks strange: stocking runs or spider web? You decide.

Ashton Shepherd: This songstress also had a Prom date in the same evening, it seems. The material of the dress looks cheap, and the overall ensemble makes the 27 year old look like she’s 17.

The Lupita Nyong’o Fashion Rainbow

lupita_blog

Lupita Nyong’o was the red carpet darling of the 2014 awards season. She looked flawless at every single event, and found herself on countless “best dressed” lists, dominating the competition. Her gowns all had simple silhouettes, were bold in color, and she frequently finished her look with a bright lipstick.

Her perfect fashions were thanks to the expert eye of celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger, who is also responsible for dressing Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery, Raising Hope’s Martha Plimpton, and Winona Ryder. Her style choices often reflect the whimsy of fashion. For Lupita, she definitely wanted a daring and playful style.

Micaela believes that Lupita’s caped Ralph Lauren gown was her most striking look. She describes it as “the perfect dress, on the perfect girl, for the perfect moment”. And indeed it was one of the most talked about gowns of the season.

Her talent is definitely one we’ll be keeping our eye on.

The Best and Worst Dressed of the 86th Academy Awards

Arguably Hollywood’s biggest night and the crown jewel of awards’ season, The Academy Awards never fails to entertain. The red carpet is where it all begins. The only thing more exciting than finding out who will nab a golden Oscar, is finding out what they’re going to wear!

Here are our picks for The 86th Academy Awards’ Best and Worst Dressed:

Best Dressed:

acadamyawards2014_best

Lupita Nyong’o: This up and coming star can do no wrong when it comes to red carpet fashion! She consistently blows the competition away with striking, yet elegant ensembles. The custom-made Prada gown made her look every inch a Grecian goddess.

Sandra Bullock: A gown fitting an Academy Award winning actress, even if the award wasn’t won this year. The twisted and pleated detail elevates this dress from mediocre to complete celebrity vixen.

Cate Blanchett: Looking radiant in Armani, Cate Blanchett took our breath away. The color of her dress almost matches her skin tone, making her look clothed in nothing but glitter and shine.

Charlize Theron: Her Dior gown cuts a striking hourglass silhouette. The train’s mesh fabric gave it a fashion-forward design while still retaining a classic and timeless feel. An all-black ensemble definitely doesn’t have to be drab!

Kate Hudson: Looking like she stepped out of a Silver Screen classic, Kate Hudson was awe-inspiring in Versace Atelier. We loved the shoulder detail and the contrasting fabric textures.

Honorable Mention: Angelina Jolie

Worst Dressed:

acadamyawards2014_worst

Julia Roberts: Why so somber, Mrs. Roberts? This peplum lace monstrosity aged her considerably. The fabric is bulky and matronly.

Chrissy Teigen: Did you and John Legend come from prom and forgot to change? Contrasted with other chic red carpet looks, this floral gown looks outdated. It stands out in all the wrong ways.

Anna Kendrick: This J. Mendel dress looks good—from afar. Take a closer look and you realize that there are some odd design choices. The pleated tiers look like they were added as an afterthought, and the red rhinestone embellishments seem out of place.

Portia de Rossi: This Naeem Khan dress had us scratching our heads. The pattern looks like a crochet design, and crochet has no place at The Academy Awards!

Sally Hawkins: The Blue Jasmine actress was covered from neck to floor, and shoulder to wrist. The embroidery helped to make it appear even more like a very conservative wedding dress.

Honorable Mention: Jada Pinkett Smith

The Best and Worst Dressed of the 2014 Grammy Awards

Last night had music’s biggest stars hitting the red carpet in high style. As always, some of these celebs looked sharp, while others fell flat.

Here are our Best and Worst Dressed of the 2014 Grammy Awards:

Best Dressed:

bestdressed_grammys

Taylor Swift: Ms. Swift looked completely statuesque and stunning in a dazzling Gucci gown. Although she joked that the dress was as heavy as chainmail, it was definitely worth it.

Chrissy Teigen: What a knockout! She outshone many of the others on the red carpet literally and figuratively in a Johanna Johnson gown. The metallic hue was eye-catching, and the dress hugged all of her curves in just the right way.

Pink: This Johanna Johanssen gown is striking. The satin design gives it some flair and makes it anything but boring.

Anna Kendrick: The cut-out bodice of this dress elevates it to stylish heights. The Azzaro dress may be in a muted color, but that didn’t stop Anna Kendrick from looking flawless.

Miranda Lambert: The country vixen matched the red carpet in a Pamella Roland gown. Her coiffed hair and the understated elegance of the dress is every inch Hollywood glamour.

Worst Dressed:

worstdressed_grammys

Ariana Grande: She might have worn this floral Dolce & Gabbana dress to her quinceanera. We know floral is in for the coming spring, but this print looked outdated.

Katy Perry: Alright, yes you’re at the Grammys, but we don’t think there was a themed dress code. The musical notes on this gauzy and poofy Valentino gown just end up making the ensemble look tacky.

Beyonce: The Michael Costello gown left very little to the imagination as Queen B strut down the red carpet. Compared to the glitz and old school Hollywood glam of other gowns, she looked a little too revealing.

Paula Patton: This dress couldn’t even pick which animal it was trying to emulate. The print is zebra, but the heads at the bust are lions. Unfortunately for Paula Patton, it was easy for us to pick which of our lists she would be on.

Sara Bareilles: She looked like someone fifteen years her junior trying to awkwardly fit in on the red carpet. The feather additions looked haphazardly applied onto a dress the color of “meh”.
