Haute Home Inspiration: Q&A With Nikki Chu

Looking for dazzling home updates? Set the scene with the all-new Nikki Chu Collection for the latest in home décor trends – a collection of elegant details, rich hues, and classic metallics. As the home design and lifestyle expert featured on HGTV, Food Network, and E!, she knows a thing or two about adding classic glamour to any room. We sat with Nikki for some hot tips and trends as well as some inside info on how she stays so on-trend as a busy entrepreneur.

Q. When did you first realize that design was your passion? And in what way has fashion influenced your creative process?

A. I’ve been creating since before I can even remember, and I have the baby pics to prove it! From a young age I was never without a pen and a pair of scissors in my hand, always drawing and crafting. As I got older, I loved rearranging my bedroom furniture, to the frustration of my mother, who had her work cut out for her trying to keep everything in order. As a teen, my love for fashion became integrated with my love of crafting and I started creating my own designs from up-cycled flea market finds – I was always doing something crafty and artistic.

Serving Set

Q. Any tips for a whole-home refresh? What advice would you give to incorporate old standbys (furniture, rugs, heirlooms etc.) with new trends?

A. I love combining old and new trends, and sometimes the smallest adjustment can go a long way in integrating a piece. Try switching some of the handles on an old dresser, for example, or updating a frame on an old mirror. If you are willing to be a bit more experimental, metallic spray paint can really give an object a fresh new look. In fact, I had this old Japanese-style folding screen that I wasn’t sure how to integrate into my collection, so I spray painted it with metallic silver in a really distressed style, so that the raw wood showed through the paint – and now i just love how it blends in perfectly with the rest of my collection!

Q. How do you stay inspired as a busy, time-pressed entrepreneur?

A. Social media is great – through Pinterest and Instagram, I can stay literally up-to-the-minute on the latest trends in home and fashion, in addition to discovering new artists and designers. Additionally, trend shows always offer inspiration, as well as places I come across on my travels, including the distinctive glamour of hotel lobbies.

Q. What was your biggest source of inspiration for the Imax collection? And what do you predict for the future of interior décor trends?

A. Mixing metals. For a while, silver was the go-to trend for home and now that gold has been making a comeback, I thought, why should a person have to choose? In my opinion, the idea that all metallics have to be matchy-matchy is a bit dated. I wanted to see something more fresh and experimental, while incorporating trends that were already in people’s homes.

Glam Accents and Gold Knots

Q. What is your favorite piece from your own personal collection?

A. I’d have to say my gold knots. I love to give them to friends as housewarming gifts. You can use them as a kind of modern centerpiece, or get a few in different sizes, or use them as bookends, etc.

So with that advice in mind, check out the Nikki Chu collection for affordable luxury and one-of-a-kind details to adorn your whole home. All that glitters is all you need!

From Oct. 20th-22nd, discover items curated and approved by Angela on BTR. Look for her stamp on apparel, beauty products and accessories to create a whole new look for yourself, styled by her discerning eye.

And don’t forget to check out our Q&A with the fashionista herself:

1) Selecting the right skincare can be daunting with the vast array of products on the market. Between moisturizers, night creams, eye creams, serums and more, what is most important to invest in for a healthy complexion?

I personally feel that the most important investment (out of all of the skincare products I use daily) is a solid eye cream. Your eyes have the most delicate skin on your face, and also are one of the first places to show signs of aging. It’s VERY important to use a good eye cream to help prevent premature signs of aging.

2) What does your fall and winter makeup palette look like? Which colors are you raving about this season?

I love deep reds and wines for lips and for eyes, I’m loving tans & golds…But honestly, I love these colors all year long! They just make the most sense during Fall/Winter.

3) Who is your celebrity red carpet style crush and why?

Blake Lively, hands down. Girlfriend can do no wrong on the red carpet. Her hair and makeup is ALWAYS flawless, and her style is always current but oh so classic and timeless.

4) What are three beauty products you could never live without?

Concealer, mascara & eye cream.

5) If I had a nickel for every time a woman asked “what should I wear” I’d probably be the wealthiest female on the planet. So we want to know, what is the perfect outfit for the following occasions:

Job interview:

Crisp white button-up top with black or gray slacks or a pencil skirt paired with classic nude pumps.

First date:

LOVE the idea of a pencil skirt paired with a tee shirt. Throw a denim jacket or casual blazer on the shoulders.

Office holiday party:

Full or bell skirt paired with a crop top and a snazzy beaded clutch.

Meet the boyfriend’s parents:

A great pair of jeans paired with a blazer and heels. Casual, yet classy.

Winter wedding:

Metallic dress with simple accessories.

Q&A with Liza Anderson: Publicist to the Stars

Liza Anderson, founder and President of Anderson Group Public Relations, is one of Hollywood’s hottest celebrity publicists. She represents a diverse spectrum of celebrity clients ranging from Eva Longoria, Terry Crews and Cary Elwes to Neil Strauss and The Most Interesting Man in the World. She pushes the creative envelope and that has made Anderson Group one of the most prominent and successful PR firms in the industry.

Liza knows that it’s crucial for her clients to make a good first impression, and today she is sharing her expertise so you too can nail it. Check out what she has to say about dressing for red-carpet events, job interviews, and celebrity style.

1) Becoming a hot publicist in Hollywood is definitely many girls ‘dream job’. How did you get involved in Public Relations and begin working with so many celebrity clients?

I got involved in PR in college interning at different PR agencies, while I was taking classes in school. I loved everything about publicity. For me, working in publicity was exciting, inspiring, and didn’t feel like a job at all. I couldn’t believe I got paid to show up at work every day. I always loved film and television and enjoyed being around actors. It’s such a creative environment and people in my business are happy, which I also find inspiring. And now that I own my own business, I go into the office every day and each day is different. I never know what sort of adventure lies ahead, and for me, that’s a great way to live. I began working with celebrities when I interned and worked at a company called BWR. At the time, they represented huge TV and film stars. I started off as an assistant answering phones and before I knew it, I had my own clients and was working as a full time publicist.

2) You are one of the hottest publicists in Hollywood, representing a number of A-list stars including, Eva Longoria, Nia Long, Candace Cameron. You attend many high profile red-carpet events with your clients – How do you decide to dress for these type of soirees? What do you usually wear?

I am always running around looking for the perfect outfit for premieres, red carpet events, and award shows. My closet is overflowing with dresses, gowns, and lots of fluffy fun pieces. I am very into buying timeless, classic pieces that I can easily mix and match with other pieces in my closet. For example, I have a gorgeous long black skirt that is belted at the waist that I have had for years. It’s tight but flowing at the ends. It goes with so many different types of tops, so I can dress it up or down depending on the event. I can add color with a great white lace top, make it sexy and sassy with a red halter top, or classic and elegant with a long sleeve silk sweater/blouse. I am all about versatility, simplicity, and practicality. I also tend to choose pieces that are comfortable. I do a lot of running around on the carpet at events so I need to be able to move, and I usually have to sit through long award shows. There is nothing worse than being in an outfit where you look good but you just can’t breathe, or you can’t bend over to fix your client’s gown.

3) With offices in both Los Angeles and New York City, you must hold many interviews with graduates who are dying to work for you. As a seasoned interviewer, what would you suggest interviewees to wear to an interview and more importantly, what not to wear?

I do look at what my potential employees wear when they come into my office because they are a reflection of me, my existing employees, the company, and most importantly, they are an extension of my clients. I don’t expect anyone to come into my office wearing expensive, designer clothes because we are all working hard for our money. I suggest wearing simple, tailored, fashionable outfits that fit. Fit is key. I think stylish and realistic is the way to go. My motto is, “If you wear the item to the beach or to a nightclub, you shouldn’t wear it to the office.” I am a big fan of jeans as long as you can dress them up well, with a fitted blazer and nice shoes. I also love a classic all-black outfit. You can never go wrong with black jeans and muted accessories.

4) On your down-time, what do you like to wear? What are three non-fashion related items can’t you live without?

On my down time, I live in “Beyond Yoga” leggings in every color known to man and Forever 21 t-shirts and tank tops. I love to be comfortable, cozy but also street chic too. I also live in soft sweats like Aviator Nation. I love these brands because they make you feel like you are wearing nothing. Three non-fashion related items I can’t live without are: my app (I am always listening to books I order on Amazon), Tetley (my 4-lb terrier/sidekick), and a light foundation for my face with a strong SPF.

5) Which celebrity’s style do you admire most and why?

I admire Angelina Jolie. She is always understated, elegant and sexy without trying too hard. She only dresses up when she has to for an event and she always looks stunning, without overdoing it. She wears her clothes; the clothes don’t wear her. And when she is not an event being photographed, she always looks feminine, comfortable and beautiful—and makes it all look so effortless. January Jones is also another favorite. She’s always fashion-forward and isn’t shy when it comes to experimenting with fashion. An expert of layering pieces and mixing silhouettes, she manages to always look so polished whether she’s on or off the red carpet.

Q&A with Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi – Look for her stamp on BTR!

You may know Nicole Polizzi from her time on the hit MTV show, The Jersey Shore, when she would only go by the one-word moniker “Snooki”. She’s all grown up now with a son, a daughter on the way, a brand new clothing line called SnookiLove, and her own podcast. This week on BTR, look for her stamp to shop her style for kids and mommies alike!

We were lucky enough to catch up with Nicole and chat with her about fashion and making the transition from TV party girl to mother.

Check out what she had to say:

1) Your life has changed drastically over the years – first in becoming a hit reality star, and then in becoming a mother. Which was the hardest to adjust to and why?

My life has been a roller coaster ever since I decided to go on Jersey Shore. 21 years old and ready to party I had the time of my life. But now as a mother, things have definitely changed and I think the biggest challenge ever was having to grow up, and become a good mother to my son. I’m so happy the way I’ve grown up and I absolutely love being a mother.

2) We know you love fashion and now you have another clothing line, “SnookiLove”. How would you describe your style?

My style is like night and day. My usual attire is me with no makeup, rocking work out pants, a simple top and either work out shoes or wedge sneakers. That’s my mom look. When I decide I want to look decent and somewhat classy, HA, I’ll wear one of my 100’s of blazers with high waist paints. That’s my go to look that’s comfy and stylish.

3) Being pregnant, are there any fall trends you are upset to be missing out on? What item can’t you wait to put on again?

Well the good thing is I’m giving birth any day now, so I won’t miss out on fall much. But even being 9 months pregnant, I’m already rocking my favorite fall looks. Fall is my favorite season to fashion because you can layer in clothes and accessories! What girl doesn’t love that? I love pairing up my leggings with a comfortable tank top, a cardigan or blazer, and comfortable boots whether they be cargo and knee high heels. And we can’t forget the stylish scarfs and hats!

4) Who was your favorite featured guest on your podcast, “Naturally Nicole”, and why?

I just recently started my podcast Naturally Nicole to people to get know me for me, not Snooki, and I absolutely love it! I have to say my favorite guests so far that I’ve interviewed are Leah Remini and The Zombie Expert Matt Mogk. I ended up falling in love with Leah on DWTS (Dancing With the Stars) and I’m so happy to have made a friendship with her. She reminds me a lot of myself in a way that she doesn’t give a crap about what anyone thinks. And I loved interviewing Matt because I’m obsessed with zombies, so it was like a dream come true learning about zombies!

5) There are definitely cute toddler fashions for boys, but moms always talk about how they love dressing up their girls! What styles are you looking forward to for your baby girl?

I always envisioned dressing up my girl in animal prints all day! But now that I kind of grew out of that, her closet is filled with pastel colored floral outfits that I can’t get enough of! I’m also obsessed with her pale pink ruffle onesies! Can’t wait to meet her and dress her up to look fabulous!

6) What do you think people would be most surprised to learn about you?

That I’m the most normal down to earth girl there is. People have this stigma of me that I’m Snooki from Jersey Shore, but to be honest that girl doesn’t exist anymore. I’m Nicole, just a young mom enjoying life way too much.

7) What fashion item do you refuse to give up during pregnancy?

My whole closet. All my “normal” clothes. I always try to still squeeze in my bottoms or some tops, knowing that they’re basically belly shirts on me, but I refuse to go full maternity clothes! I’m small as it is, I can make it work!

8) During your partying days, you once said in an interview that you didn’t want to be a role model. Has that changed and why?

I still don’t consider myself a role model. But it is nice to have people tell me what an inspiration I am when it comes to me losing weight, becoming healthy, and changing my whole lifestyle and life for my son. I’ve helped a lot of people with conquering their weight issues and also becoming a better person. It’s possible! Just takes time. I’m glad I can help others out, but waking up every day trying to be a role model is not my intention. If anything, I want to be a role model to my son and my new baby. They need a great mother that they can look up to and turn to for advice for the rest of their lives, and I’m doing my best!

Jesse Kovacs Picks for Men’s Day

Jesse Kovacs has been a fan favorite on three separate Bachelor shows, he owns his own wine label with his brother, he’s a published author, as well as the co-owner of Liquid Lounge in San Diego. His star certainly is on the rise! Today on BTR for Men’s Day, we asked this eligible bachelor a few questions about finding love on TV, his love of wine, as well as his fashion choices for a first date.

Check out what he had to say:

1) Are you ever surprised when watching the show, or do you pretty much anticipate what will happen based on filming?

I’m always surprised when I watch the show live. Usually a producer will call the day before and give you a rundown of what’s going to happen but alas, the power of editing. The things people say during their respective interviews, usually late at night, usually four cocktails deep, are always surprising.

2) There is always drama on the Bachelor franchises. How much is real and how much is “made for TV”? Is there ever any drama that is NOT aired?

Oh no, if there is drama it will be aired. Sometimes the drama is elongated or exaggerated but most of the time it’s real. When a group of people are living together and there is no real alone time with no music, television, reading material, or any other outlet, people start getting a little jumpy.

3) When auditioning for the Bachelorette, what made you decide to look for love in the public eye? And now that you’ve tried finding love on TV, do you still believe it’s a good way to find your one and only? Would you do things differently?

When I was approached to do the show I just thought this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I never thought I would be asked back for two more shows. I have met a lot of awesome people and I’ve seen quite a few cast members fall in love either on the show or outside of filming. So the Bachelor machine definitely works and I do believe you can find love on this show.

4) Have you made any lasting friends with the other castmates from any of the shows you’ve been on?

I still am really good friends with a lot of castmates. Dave Good, Graham Bunn, Michael Stagliano, Kiptyn, and Natalie Getz are all good friends of mine.

5) When did you begin to have an interest in wine?

I first helped my Dad make a barrel of Cab in our garage when I was in High School. It was so exciting to finally try it 2 years later. We had created something that brought people together. It was fun to see these people appreciate what we did and want to buy bottles from us.

6) Was it challenging starting the wine label with your brother? Did you butt heads?

While I was still playing professional baseball, I wrote up a business plan and shopped it around. I finally got the start up money and we bought all the necessary equipment and made our first two wines. We threw our launch party Thanksgiving eve of 2007. Jacob and I basically drove up and down California, sleeping in our car, eating trail mix and selling wine. We definitely butted heads on occasion because he likes the labor process more and I’m more of the “lets get out there and sell” kind of guy.

7) How would you describe your fashion sense (when you are actually wearing a shirt!)? Did it change once you were in the public eye?

I would describe my fashion sense as laid back. I really like to dress up, but only because I don’t do it that often. My everyday look is very casual but I still like fitted shirts and funky shoes.

8) What do you recommend guys wear for a great first date outfit?

This all depends on the location of the date. If you go on a date in a laid back beach community you need to wear something light and colorful. But if the date is Downtown I would say nice jeans with a good pair a Tsobu boots with a tailored shirt. No tie unless you came straight from the office.

9) And of course, what do you hope your date will wear on your first date?

I tend to be attracted toward fun and funky. When I see girls with short tight fitting bandage dresses it makes me laugh. I say save that for Vegas!
